About CA Foundation

The CA Foundation Course serves as the entry-level exam for aspiring chartered accountants under the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), previously known as the Common Proficiency Test (CPT). It consists of five papers and is conducted thrice annually by ICAI. Upon passing CA Foundation, candidates proceed to the Intermediate and Final levels to qualify as chartered accountants.

Paper 1: Accounting

This paper will enhance your understanding of fundamental accounting concepts and principles. It aims to empower you to construct financial statements efficiently, address basic accounting principles, and align them with challenges in accounting.

Paper 2: Business Laws

The key objective of this paper is to help students understand crucial aspects of specific business laws and equip them to tackle real-world issues related to these laws.

Paper 3: Quantitative Aptitude

This part is designed to assist you in developing an understanding of the essential mathematical and statistical tools that should be applied in business, finance, and different economic scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CA Foundation Course is the entry-level examination conducted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for the Chartered Accountancy course. It lays the foundation for the CA course, helping candidates understand various accounting principles and their implications on different kinds of accounts.

Candidates who have passed their Class 10th examination conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an equivalent examination recognized by the Central or State Government can register for the Foundation Course. They can appear for the exam after completing their Senior Secondary Examination (10+2 level).

Candidates can register for the CA Foundation Course by filling out the Online Registration Form on the official ICAI website under the "E-SERVICES" tab. After filling out the form and paying the registration fee online, the form should be printed and submitted to the concerned regional office within 7 days along with the required documents.

The fee structure includes:

  • Cost of Foundation Prospectus: Rs. 200
  • Foundation Registration Fee: Rs. 9000
  • Subscription for Student’s Journal (optional): Rs. 200
  • Subscription for Member’s Journal (optional): Rs. 400

The CA Foundation Examination consists of four papers:

  • Paper 1: Accounting (Subjective)
  • Paper 2: Business Laws (Subjective)
  • Paper 3: Quantitative Aptitude (Objective with negative marking)
  • Paper 4: Business Economics (Objective with negative marking)

A candidate is declared to have passed the CA Foundation Examination if they secure at least 40% marks in each paper and 50% marks in aggregate of all the papers.

Candidates can apply for the CA Foundation Examination by submitting the exam form online on the official ICAI website before the last date.

The exam fee is:

For Indian Centres: INR 1500
For Kathmandu (Nepal) Centre: INR 2200
For Overseas Centres (Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai, Muscat): US $325

The CA Foundation Admit Card can be downloaded from the official ICAI website. Candidates need to log in, take a printout of the admit card on A4-sized paper, and carry it to the examination center.

The CA Foundation results are usually announced about 2 months after the exam. The results can be checked on the official ICAI website.

The validity period for CA Foundation registration is 4 years from the first eligible attempt in the Foundation Examination. Revalidation is not permitted at the Foundation level.

  • For the January exam: Register by 1st September.
  • For the June exam: Register by 1st February.
  • For the September exam: Register by 1st May.

No, there is no age limit for registering for the CA Foundation course.

The CA Foundation exams are offline, pen-and-paper-based tests.

Yes, graduates, postgraduates, and candidates with equivalent qualifications are exempt from the CA Foundation exam and can directly enroll for the Intermediate Course.

You can download and print a new copy of your Admit Card from the ICAI website by logging in with your credentials.

The CA Foundation exams are conducted thrice a year in January, May/June, and September.
